Fear is an effective motivator. The looming reality of a 26-mile marathon or even a 5k run, has the power to make even the most lackadaisical among us get out of bed, and this is the perfect season to galvanise your exercise routine by planning your next challenge, even more so when you're completing a challenge for charity to raise money for the worthiest of causes — be it completing the breath taking Three Peak walk in Yorkshire, swimming across the Thames or completing a 5k run alongside hundreds of people being splashed with every colour of powder paint you could imagine?!
Not only should the fear of completing a challenge keep you going though, but knowing this could be the start of a beautiful new or perhaps renewed friendship with keeping fit and accomplishing a new goal!
For the jogging and runner types, it's not too late to sign up for the Cancer Research UK 10k Winter Run, being hosted in Manchester, London and Liverpool. This is the perfect opportunity to achieve those January new years resolutions goals sooner rather than later (so long as you are comfortable with running this distance in a short amount of time - don't push yourself too hard!)

The Colour Run involves completing 5k but with a rather large amount of colour added along the way..This is the perfect run to take part in with friends, family or a great way to have a laugh with new people.
Meanwhile, London’s lidos are filling up with people defying the weather because they have open- water swims to train for. The Great Newham swim is on July 15, which is a while away, but challenges are kinda like exams — cramming is a false economy and the more groundwork you do, the better! Never push yourself too hard too close to the time. This swim is a chance to get in the Thames, which will have warmed up by July, and go from the O2 Arena to Canary Wharf. It’s clean there, apparently. You can do anything from half a mile to two, why not complete with a partner by your side!
